Preschool core curriculum

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfill their potential. Children develop quickly in their early years, and a child’s experiences between birth and age five significantly impact their future opportunities. Maple Bear sets high standards to ensure children are ready for elementary school. We provide a broad range of knowledge and skills that create the right foundation for successful progress in school and in life.

English Language Arts

By the end of Senior Kindergarten, children will communicate effectively in English through listening and speaking, have a solid understanding of alphabetical symbols, be able to read basic English texts, use phonics strategies to tackle new words, employ writing strategies appropriate for beginners, and engage with various media.

Personal and Social Development

Children will learn to share, respect others, listen actively, and understand that people have different talents and roles in our society.

Science and Technology

Children will demonstrate curiosity about the natural world, show knowledge of the characteristics of common materials, identify cycles in nature using observational techniques, and collaborate with others to use computers in all aspects of their studies.

Creative Activity

Children will understand color, shape, and the use of media to express ideas. They will be able to describe their responses to music, art, drama, and dance.

Physical Skills and Well-Being

Children will develop physical skills such as balance and flexibility, become aware of health and safety rules, and understand the importance of sharing, taking turns, cooperation, and socially acceptable behavior.

Mathematics

Children will become problem solvers. They will learn about patterns in their environment, number concepts, comparisons, sets, basic operations (e.g., addition and subtraction), 2D and 3D objects, simple graphs, basic measurements, estimation, and fundamental probability.

Language Development and Acquisition

Children enter Maple Bear School with a foundation in their home language. In learning their first language, they pass through several stages in a predictable order: listening, developing understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Successive stages begin while earlier ones are still being developed. When Maple Bear children learn a second language, their development follows the same stages and sequence as in their first language. Research shows that learning two languages at an early age provides both linguistic and cognitive advantages.

Immersion methodology is employed in Maple Bear schools to foster competence in a second language. This means children learn to listen, speak, read, and write in the second language through exposure to conversation and instruction from day one.

Literacy, which encompasses listening, speaking, reading, and writing, is one of the most important goals of the Maple Bear program.

Maple Bear schools offer comprehensive programs using the Canadian methodology from early childhood. We take our responsibility to our students and their parents very seriously. Strict quality controls ensure that we apply Canadian best practices in education.
